Highway to ZOMBIE Hell

In the mood for some claw-scratching and spine-tingling action? Good, because FEARnet is bringing you the thriller Zombie Roadkill, premiering October 4, 2010. This terrifyingly funny series follows a group of college kids driving for a weekend getaway, but soon everything will take a dark turn.

This unfamiliar stretch of highway leads them to the woods where wronged woodland creatures have been reanimated as vengeful, murderous zombies. Luckily park ranger Chet Materson aka Thomas Haden Church, is among the living and on a mission to help these kids escape this dreadful nightmare.

You can catch this suspenseful series on FEARnet.com as of October 4th. The site will launch two episodes on the first day, with a new episode released each day the rest of the week.

Sex and the Zombies

While we generally stick to topics of horror, ZRTNV enjoys a good comedy or chick flick that channels the undead. That is why we were particularly excited to hear the early buzz about the anticipated and severely over-advertised, "Sex and the City 2".

After sifting through some of the film's key art, I couldn't shake the persistent feeling of Déjà vu. "Sex" is looking like a sequel to my favorite 90's comedy, "Death Becomes Her".

In the words of Carrie, I couldn't help but wonder...is Manhattan's Fabulous Foursome looking less like fashionistas and more like Frankenstein in Jimmy Choos?

You tell me. Helen Sharp or Carrie Bradshaw?

Madeline Ashton or Samantha Jones?

Suddenly this weekends box office line-up is more appealing.

Juan of the Dead

First we had Dawn of the Dead, then we had Shaun of the Dead, two of my all time favorite films. You can imagine my excitement when I heard about Cuba's new zombie film, Juan of the Dead (or Juan de Los Muertos)

Below is a brief description of the film:

"a 40-year-old slacker named Juan notices that people are beginning to turn violent. As a zombie epidemic spreads through Havana, he decides to make a quick buck, offering to slay people's infected relatives. But as the zombie plague reaches national proportions Juan has to concentrate on his survival."

The film, set to begin filming in September, stars Alexis Diaz de Villegas as the zombie killing Juan.

5ta Avenida Producciones and La Zanfona Produccione are the two production companies for the Alejandro Brugues directed film.

Obviously, one of this site's favorite films of all time. There's not a single horror fan that doesn't know this zombie tune by heart.

Andrea has been cast!

According to yesterday's Hollywood Reporter, AMC has tapped "The Sheild" actress, Laurie Holden to play Andrea - the sniper expert who falls for a much older man.

Two very different images popped up when we were doing a little research

We're guessing Holden will look a little more like the second for this series.

Steven Yeun has been added to the cast as well. There isn't much online about Yeun we did find this picture of him looking like he's had some zombie attack experiences.

More casting news from "Walking Dead" was announced last week from FEARnet

It has been confirmed that Jeffrey DeMunn will appear the the show, although it is not yet known what character he will play.

From the FEARnet article:

"DeMunn is a Darabont regular, having appeared in The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, The Majestic, and The Mist, as well as the Darabont-scripted 1988 remake of The Blob. DeMunn's also known to horror fans as a star of the cult classic You Better Watch Out (a.k.a. Christmas Evil) and Stephen King's Storm of the Century."

Mark Grimes Has Been Cast!

The role of Mark Grimes has officially been cast.

Despite rumors that Mark Pellegrino, Jonny Lee Miller, or Jamie Bamber would nab the role, it looks like British actor Andrew Lincoln will be our brain bashing hero.

I remember Lincoln from "Love Actually," as the character is in love with his best friend's wife. This sappy scene will probably ring a bell. I think it's safe to say our days of seeing him look this this are over:

Robert Kirkman, the comic who wrote "The Walking Dead," had this to say (via The Hollywood Reporter)

"Andrew Lincoln, wow -- what an amazing find this guy is," said Robert Kirkman, who wrote the comic book series upon which the series is based. "Writing Rick Grimes month after month in the comic series, I had no idea he was an actual living breathing human being, and yet here he is. I couldn't be more thrilled with how this show is coming together."

Jon Bernthal to Play Shane on "The Walking Dead"

"The Ghost Writer" co-star Jon Bernthal will play the main character, Shane in the new AMC series, "The Walking Dead"

What else do we know about Jon? His IMDB Page gives us his past credits, as well as a pretty interesting mini bio:

"Jon Bernthal was raised in Washington D.C. He went to study at The Moscow Art Theatre School, in Moscow, Russia, where he also played professional baseball in the European professional baseball federation. While in Moscow, he was noticed by the director of Harvard University's Institute for Advanced Theatre Training at the American Repretory Theatre and was invited to obtain his M.F.A there. After graduating in 2002 he has performed in over 30 plays regionally and off-Broadway including many with his own award-winning theatre company Fovea Floods. He now lives in Venice, California with his dog, Boss."

New Zombie Series to Debut on AMC Next Fall!

Zombie fans, rejoice! Our favorite graphic novel, "The Walking Dead," has been given a six episode order!

The apocalyptic zombie drama based on Robert Kirkman's graphic novel series, will debut next fall on AMC during the network's annual Fearfest.

The series will follow a diminishing number of human survivors as they navigate a world controlled by zombies.

Frank Darabont is writing/directing and Gale Anne Hurd is producing the series.

ZRTNV is going to follow every detail of the series as the June filming date approaches.

"Walking Dead" on AMC

The Hollywood Reporter says that AMC is picking up a new zombie pilot, "Walking Dead".

The series is based on Robert Kirkman's comic book, and chronicles the months and years following a zombie apocalypse and focuses on a group of survivors, led by policeman Rick Grimes, who travels in search of a secure home.

Humans Vs. Zombies at UGA

We at ZRTNV are huge U. of Georgia fans (duh, red & black) so we are excited about the upcoming Humans vs. Zombies campus wide game coming up this Monday, Nov. 9th

Here is a description from the Facebook event page:

The outbreak has come to UGA!

Humans vs. Zombies is a campus-wide game played Monday through Friday at all hours. Everyone will start as a human. Twenty people will be secretly chosen to be the first zombies. The objective is for the zombie horde to infect all humans over the course of the week.

Start time = Sunrise on Monday the 9th
End time = Sunset on Friday the 13th

Player Objectives:

Humans - YOU ARE TRYING TO SURVIVE until the end! Humans can win by "killing" all of the zombies or by having at least one human surviving the Infection at the end of the game.

Zombies - YOU ARE TRYING TO FEED on human players! If all players become zombies, then the zombies win the game. Zombies can die if they do not "feed" at least once every 48 hours. If a zombie dies, it is out of the game completely for that week. *Feeding is explained more completely in section 3 of the rules.*

University of Florida Prepares Student For Zombie Attacks

Along with disaster plans for hurricanes and pandemics, the University of Florida has added a zombie repsonse plan to its website. According to the plan, you should "Watch for increasing numbers of gruesome unexplained deaths and dissapearances" and "lots of strange moaning".

Hollywood Helps You Prepare For The Zombie Apocalypse

MTV.com ran a story today about movies that prepare you for the apocolypse. Below are some exerts from the article or you can read the whole thing here

"'If something looks dead, it probably isn't.' Example: “28 Days Later”

Given that humanity is on the brink of extinction and the dead have started to rise from the grave, it is highly likely that you will come across some bodies after the zombie apocalypse has taken place. There is no way to really prepare yourself for this unsavory sight, but be cautious all the same, especially when multiple bodies are in the same place. Just look at poor Jim (Cillian Murphy) at the beginning of “28 Days Later.” Guy comes across a church filled with bodies, thinks maybe some poor soul is alive in there, and says hello. Nothing alive in there, but there sure were a ton of freaking zombies. As in life, so it is in the zombie apocalypse: stay the hell away from corpses.

'You must have the tools as well as the talent.' Example: “Shaun of the Dead”

It is widely known and accepted that the only way to effectively stop zombies from eating all your goodies is to destroy their heads. Whether your zombies are supernatural lumberers or the speedy scientific accidents of the modern age, blowing up their noggins is the only universal method of keeping them dead. Remember though: no matter how cool your idea for an implement of head-destruction is, make sure your choice is realistic. Do not, as Shaun (Simon Pegg) does, use LPs. Records are only good at destroying zombie heads conceptually. Get a sledgehammer already."

New Zombie Webseries

"Woke Up Dead" is the new zombie webseries starring John Heder. The story is about a recent grad, Drex (Heder) who wakes up in a bathtub to find himself experiencing zombie like symptoms. Along with his friends Cassie and Matt, he tries to figure out why these changes are happening.

The series premiered right after Sony's "Zombieland" came in #1 at the box office so we have high hopes for this one!
